Obituary of Gail Louise Tompkins Inglis

Gail Louise Tompkins Inglis, of Venice, FL, passed away on April 23, 2024, after bravely battling Rheumatoid Arthritis. Born to John and Dorothy (née Myer) Tompkins in Perth Amboy, NJ, on September 13, 1955. She grew up in Somerset, NJ, graduating from Franklin High School in 1973. On May 12, 1979, Gail married Robert (Bob) Inglis in Somerset, NJ. They later moved to Milford, NJ. Together, they raised their daughter, Amy. Gail's passion for nursing was ignited during high school when she worked as an aide in a nursing home. This opportunity is what inspired her to become a nurse and it was also where she fell in love with geriatric care. Gail graduated from Nursing School in 1982. She initially worked in hospitals before transitioning to home health care when Amy was young. Later, she became a nursing supervisor at a nursing agency in NJ. During Amy’s childhood and through high school, Gail led a Girl Scout Troop. In fact, several of the girls under Gail’s command earned their Gold Awards, this is the highest possible achievement for Girl Scouts. Amy was one of those girls and she holds this achievement in high regard, especially to have achieved it with her mom leading her troop. Gail was a remarkable crafter and seamstress, sewing several special event dresses and costumes for Amy throughout her childhood and early adult years. She found great enjoyment in creativity and gifting others with her special projects. Sadly, her arthritis prevented her from continuing her sewing and craft projects. Always dreaming of living near the beach with a pool, Gail and Bob relocated to Venice, Florida, in 2004, where she started a private practice as a Geriatric Care Manager until her final retirement in 2016. Post-retirement, she cherished traveling around the United States, visiting new locales, and spending time with family and friends, making new acquaintances along the way. She especially treasured her time in Mechanicsburg, PA, with her daughter, granddaughter Raia, and son-in-law Jesse. Gail is survived by her husband, Bob, of the home, daughter Amy (Jesse) Schafer, and granddaughter Raia of Mechanicsburg, PA. She is also survived by her sisters and brother: Cheryl (Robert Sorenson) Tompkins of Venice, FL, Brian (Diane) Tompkins of Milford, NJ, and Joyce Tompkins of Liverpool, PA. Additionally, she leaves behind nieces Amanda and Micaela Tompkins of New York City, NY. Gail's beloved cats, Trouble and Lizzy, were her constant companions during her illness. A lover of all animals, her compassion for them likely stemmed from her childhood, where she and her siblings had pets in their home. A celebration of Gail's life will be held on May 7, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Venice, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, https://www.stjude.org/give/memorials-and-dedications/donation-in-honor-ofsomeone.html?sc_icid=wtg-lz-honor Gail will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Rest in peace, our dear wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt.
